the arrangment to three years, but this I felt it would be useless even to refer to liongkong so again he promised to consult his colleagues in order to discover if possible a way whereby the rupture of negotiations could be avoided.

On the following day I was informed that the British offer of 35% to 65% could be accepted provided the term of the whole Working Agreement were altered from ten

years to five.

This proposal I telegraphed to the Governor who

replied on the 5th. instant accepting the alteration.

The vexed division of the division of profits

having thus been disposed of, there is reason to hope that the way has been cleared for an understanding on the few other

points still unsettled and that the Coverment of Hongkong will now be in a position to complete the Working Agreement at

an early date.
